When I travelled to New York last year I found it really stressful trying to find free WiFi in the airports. Later in Connecticut and New York, there is lots of free WiFi but you don’t know exactly which places have it. I thought there must be a way to get free WiFi everywhere. When I thought of doing this post I decided to ask my daughter, if she had any of these Apps on her phone. To my great surprise, she had never heard of them! Surprising for someone who is only 23 and never off her smartphone. Writing this post I have found out that you can get free WiFi almost everywhere if you know how to look.
I also discovered that with most of these Apps you can add a free or paid hotspot. This got me to thinking of the business advantage with these Apps. If you have a retail outlet or a coffee shop in a small town and you have WiFi, whether free or paid, you can add your details to the App. With most people glued to their smartphones these days, by adding your hotspot details you could be one of the first places a tourist would go.
The following Apps are ones I personally have researched and all have excellent reviews. There are tons on the market and most are for free but it is important to remember that when you connect to a public WiFi network, you’re opening up a lot of your data to the world. To stay safe on public WiFi networks, read this article by LifeHacker.com “How to Stay Safe on Public WiFi Networks“.

Fun Fact :
“The name Wi-Fi, commercially used at least as early as August 1999, was coined by the brand-consulting firm Interbrand. The Wi-Fi Alliance had hired Interbrand to create a name that was “a little catchier than ‘IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence’. Phil Belanger, a founding member of the Wi-Fi Alliance who presided over the selection of the name “Wi-Fi”, has stated that Interbrand invented Wi-Fi as a pun upon the word ‘hi-fi”. (Wikipedia)
